Basnews -ERBIL – The United States has condemned the use of “lethal force” by the Iranian security forces against the protesters who have been taking to the streets since Friday night.
Tens of thousands of people across Iran have been demonstrating against a surprising increase in petrol prices, while over 25 people have so far been killed and hundreds more have been injured, according to local reports.
“The United States supports the Iranian people in their peaceful protests against the regime that is supposed to lead them,” the White House said in a statement.
“We condemn the lethal force and severe communications restrictions used against demonstrators.”
Meanwhile, the US accused Iran of funding “terrorist proxies” in the Middle East rather than using the money in JCPOA sanctions relief to build schools or hospitals.
“We stand by the people of Iran as they demand accountability and transparency from their government. Iran did not use the billions of dollars in JCPOA sanctions relief to build schools or hospitals, but to fund terrorist proxies throughout the Middle East,” the spokesperson for US Department of State, Morgan Ortagus, wrote on Twitter.
