Iranian president issues message of peace at UN

Iran wishes to convey a message of peace to the world on the end of interventions in the Persian Gulf and Middle East, President Hassan Rouhani said Monday.

Iran wants all parties to adhere to their commitments and laws, Rouhani told Iranian media outlets in New York.

“Our region is under very sensitive conditions. We hope that we will be able to convey the peace message of the region’s people about the end of all interventions in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East to the world,” he said.

Rouhani said he will hold important meetings with many people, especially world leaders, during his four-day visit to New York as part of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

His remarks come amid tensions between Iran and the U.S. after Washington backed out of a deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear program last year and re-imposed sanctions.

Tensions have risen since then, with the U.S. accusing Iran of attacking Saudi oil production facilities on Sept. 14 and announcing the deployment of an unspecified number of troops to Saudi Arabia. France, Germany and the U.K. are also blaming Iran for the attack.

Drones hit two production units belonging to Saudi state-run oil company Aramco in the north of Saudi Arabia in the attack, which was claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
