This clever non-surgical treatment can hide your hair loss in an instant.
By Amy Curtis – Journalist and certified personal trainer
Hair loss can be the result of a number of medical and psychological conditions, as well as one of the most common causes: male- and female-pattern baldness. But whatever the reason, for most people, it’s very distressing, especially as there are no easy solutions or cures.
Help is at hand though, in the form of scalp micropigmentation. Rather than trying to make the hair grow back, this treatment creates the illusion of real hair through an intricate tattoo. Similar to ‘microblading’, this treatment is quick, relatively pain free and very effective, as Wayne Singleton, Scalp Solutions at Samantha Trace Cosmetics explains.
What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a medical non-surgical cosmetic tattoo that gives the vision of a close buzz-cut hairstyle on a bald head or adds density to a thinning hairline. This procedure can be used for:
✔️ Concealing scars from hair transplantations
✔️ Covering burn scars
✔️ Tacking skin conditions such as alopecia
Does scalp micropigmentation hurt?
While most people do not find SMP painful, there is a level of pain or discomfort felt during the procedure; however everyone has different pain thresholds. The level the of any discomfort would be a three out of 10 at most (with 10 being very painful and one being not painful at all). Some describe the feeling of a small pinprick on the scalp while others even find it relaxing.
How long does scalp micropigmentation last?
SMP is a permanent solution to hair loss and with the correct maintenance and touch ups it will last a lifetime. Touch ups will depend on the client’s immune system and other various factors, the biggest being sun exposure. Some clients touch up every four to six years whereas some need it every three years. No two clients are the same.
Is scalp micropigmentation expensive?
Scalp Micropigmentation is the easiest long-term solution, if you suffer from hair loss or thinning hair, although the initial procedure may seem expensive, the results are immediate. Prices start from £400 and go up to around £2,500; the exact cost of the treatment will be determined after a personal consultation.
Are scalp micropigmentation results immediate?
SMP is immediately effective from the first session. All routine SMP treatments require three separate sessions. There may be some slight redness after treatment which will subside within a few hours.
How is scalp micropigmentation maintained?
For the first few days exercise or extensive sweating is not allowed, it is important not to let your scalp to get wet, or wear hats that may rub on your new treatment. After four days the head can be washed or shaved. Take sensible precautions in the sun using high factor sun creams and keep your scalp moisturised daily. Keeping your scalp in good condition benefits your overall appearance as well as your pigment.
Can anyone have scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation is suitable for men and women from the age of 18. During consultations medical history will be checked for possible temporary or permanent conditions which may affect the treatment.
Scalp micropigmentation accreditation
Does the person performing SMP treatment need special qualifications and how do you know they are reputable? Check that your SMP practitioner is fully qualified in advanced scalp micropigmentation and has undergone extensive training to level 4 Standards – the highest independent qualification. You should also make sure that full practitioner’s insurance is held; a good practitioner will have this available to be seen on request.
