KoKo and Tracey Cunningham just gave us a master class in switching up your shade for winter.

It’s been a few days since Khloé Kardashian went platinum blonde for winter, and we finally have more details about the process it took to get her there (plus a fire new selfie from the new mom). Colorist Tracey Cunningham gave Refinery29 the breakdown, which included four full hours of work. Why so long? Cunningham says it depends on the “starting level and condition” of your hair. Meaning: For some it could take longer and for others it could take less time. It simply depends on the state of your strands.
To take Kardashian platinum — and maintain her hair’s strength — Cunningham mixed Redken’s Flash Lift with Olaplex to highlight her darker pieces first. “When going platinum, it’s so important that your colorist uses a bonder in the bleach or lightener to ensure that breakage and damage done is minimal,” she explained. She then used a combination of clear gloss and Redken Shades EQ in Onyx, which is a deep blue hue that helped to cancel out the yellow tones in the star’s hair after bleaching it. “When using this technique, I apply the gloss at the [shampoo] bowl and quickly rinse it off,” she said. “Leaving that gloss on for too long can turn platinum hair gray.”
To keep up with her new color, Kardashian will likely have to see Cunningham every couple weeks to touch up her roots — unless she decides to grow them out, that is. Regardless, it’s definitely something to consider if you want to go icy-white this winter. Want more seasonal hair inspo? Check this mushroom-inspired hair color out. (Thanks, Instagram.)
You can take the girl out of Calabasas, and apparently, you can dye the California sunshine out of the girl, too. Khloé Kardashian has spent some time rocking a highlighted golden blonde lob, taking inspiration from the beachy waves associated with her home state. But it seems like the icy winters of Cleveland have gotten to her — and she switched up her hair to match.
On Tuesday, colorist Tracey Cunningham posted two Instagram videos of the new mom showing off a cooled down, platinum blonde shade. Kardashian posed for the camera and flipped her new hair while cuddling baby True.
Cunningham broke down exactly how she achieved the color in her captions: First she highlighted all the brown in Kardashian’s hair to lift her existing color using Redken Flashlift and Olaplex. Then she added more highlights to the blonde section, leaving a tiny bit of Khloé’s dark roots. She then used a gloss, painting from the roots and pouring it over the hair. “I Love doing your haircolor,” Cunningham wrote to Kardashian. “And you were so patient because I had to highlight all the brown in your hair first.” See? Even Kardashians have to sit for hours in the stylist’s chair while they wait for their color to lift. Celebrities, they’re just like us…sorta.
Judging by how much Kardashian (and baby True) seem to love the new color, we have a feeling this shade will stick around for a while — at least until 2019. You heard it from Khloé first: New year, new hair.
