Earning a CV line no-one could have predicted 10 years ago, Kim Kardashian is set to be honoured at fashion’s most prestigious awards.
The reality star (and fashion designer, app developer and social media ballgame changer) will receive the inaugural “Influencer Award” from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), it was announced on Wednesday.
The annual CFDA Fashion Awards generally recognise high-end fashion and costume designers. This year’s ceremony will be on June 4, with Kardashian expected to attend.
In a statement announcing the accolade, the council’s chair, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, said Kardashian had “mastered the meaning of influence in the digital age”, noting her 200 million social media followers.
“Kim is the most important and powerful influencer in the world,” CFDA board member and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger told Pret-a-Reporter. “Her reach extends far beyond her own brands. Every time she wears, posts or talks about a fashion brand, there is an immediate and significant increase in both awareness and sales.”
Kardashian, who owns a number of fashion and beauty brands including KKW Beauty and KKW fragrance, reacted to the news excitedly on Twitter.
The award, in a way, demonstrates the success of the 37-year-old’s rebrand from “famous for being famous” trashy reality star to front-row sitting celebrity, which can be loosely tracked alongside the start of her relationship with her now-husband, rapper/fashion designer/man with foot stuck in mouth Kanye West, in 2012.
In a January episode of her family’s reality television show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the mother of three revealed her husband sends her email memos keeping her up to date with what the cool kids are wearing.
“[Kanye] sent me a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big glasses anymore. It’s all about tiny little glasses,'” Kardashian said, while wearing said tiny glasses. “He sent me, like, millions of ’90s photos with tiny little glasses like this.”
Other big names to be honoured at next month’s ceremony include Donatella Versace (receiving the “International Award”) and Von Furstenberg herself, who will presumably shake her own hand as she receives the “Swarovski Award for Positive Change”.
