NATO supports the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia Javier Colomina said on Monday.
In a tweet addressing Azerbaijan’s repatriation of eight servicemen of Armenian origin, Colomina called the development “good news.”
“NATO appreciates the partnership with both Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he noted.
According to Colomina, the normalization of relations between the two countries will contribute to ensuring stability and prosperity in the region.
Guided by the principle of humanism, Azerbaijan on Monday repatriated eight servicemen to Armenia.
Several of those repatriated servicemen had been in detention since November 16, 2021, when they were apprehended during the suppression of an Armenian border attack on Kalbajar.
Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.
