BEIRUT: Famed Hollywood US actress Meryl Streep has donated $25,000 for helping abused women in Lebanon overcome the trauma of the August 4 Beirut blast. The donation was made straight to KAFA, Lebanon’s leading women’s rights NGO responsible for helping domestically battered women (and their children) seek shelter and self-empowerment.
“Thank u #MerylStreep for your generous contribution to Kafa’s relief work supporting women who lost their houses,or have been injured/traumatized as a result of Beirut explosion,” Kafa’s tweet read. “Your contribution with 25000$ is not but an additional proof of your support of women’s rights.”
“Our priority after the blast was helping abused women affected by the explosion,” Zoya Rouhana, cofounder and director of KAFA NGO told Annahar. “We found more than 100 ladies affected by the blast physically and mentally, and we immediately set up donation pages to help those women through the aid of donors like Oxfam and other reputable institutions.”
Among these reputable institutions was the Sisterhood Is Global Institute which set up a page for KAFA asking online visitors to help the women and children affected by the blast.
“Often international humanitarian responses are unable to reach or address the specific needs of women and children,” their website read. “Historically, front line women’s organizations like KAFA have the skill and presence within the community to ensure that the needs of women and children are met in times of such crisis.”
One unexpected donor through the Sisterhood Is Global Institute was, of course, Streep herself.
This is not the first time that she exhibits exuberant generosity. A 2012 report by Forbes found Streep has given away millions to charity through her foundation, with support going to many organizations including Oxfam America, New York’s Meals on Wheels, the Coalition for the Homeless, and the National Women’s History Museum.
