Lira crisis gives Turkish opposition chance to challenge Erdoğan

Turkey’s ruling People’s Alliance received 40.7 percent support, according to a May survey by polling company Metropoll, while the combined support for three opposition parties who are part of an alliance, trailed behind by 1.4 percentage points.

This month’s “Turkey Pulse” survey found that combined support for the main opposition the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), centre-right nationalist Good Party (İP)  and opposition Islamist Felicity Party (SP) registered at 39.3 percent.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has 26.5 percent support among Turkish voters, according to the May survey by polling company Metropoll, up 1.3 percentage points since last month.

Undecided voters continue to form 8 percent of the population, down slightly from 8.8 percent in the previous month’s poll.

Turkey’s ruling AKP was followed by the main opposition CHP at 18.4 percent and centre-right nationals Good Party (İP) at 12.2 percent, in a response to the question: “If there were a parliamentary election this Sunday, which political party would you vote for?” according to the Metropoll survey.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) received 13.8 percent of votes, it found, well above the election threshold.

Six opposition parties, including the CHP, İP and SP, have built an alliance on a shared set of principles focused on abolishing a presidential system of government in Turkey that granted vast executive powers to Erdoğan in 2018. The parties began the talks last year after opinion polls showed that Erdoğan and his AKP were suffering a decline in public support ahead of elections slated for June 2023.

The far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the junior coalition partner of AKP, saw 6.5 percent support, the Metropoll survey found, up from 5.7 percent in April.

The survey arrives as Turkey grapples with soaring inflation, which has surged to a two-decade high after the lira slumped against the dollar in 2021, threatening the ruling party at the next polls.

Consumer price inflation in Turkey may accelerate to more than 200 percent, local research organisation ENAGgroup said in a report this week.
