Police fine mother of ex-military cadet serving life sentence for protesting gov’t

Melek Çetinkaya, the mother of a former military cadet who was sentenced to life in prison due to his alleged role in a 2016 coup attempt, was briefly taken into police custody and fined for protesting the Turkish government without a permit, according to the tr724 news website.

On Saturday she joined Cemal Yıldırım, an ex-public servant who was dismissed by a government decree after the coup, in his long-lasting protest in Ankara.

A police officer took her into custody after she opened a banner saying: “19-year-old military cadets, conscripts in their 5th day, young officer trainees were given life sentences [by the courts]. We have been awaiting justice in dark prisons for three years.”

After the failed coup 259 military cadets were sentenced to life in prison for attempting to overthrow the government. Çetinkaya was later released and fined TL 320 ($56).
