YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 15, ARMENPRESS. Russia considers the use of force unacceptable and is calling on Azerbaijan and Armenia to implement all agreements reached around the ceasefire in mediation of Russia, the Russian Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said at the UN Security Council meeting.
Nebenzya thanked UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča for appreciating Russia’s mediation role in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
“The Russian Federation is extremely concerned over the drastic escalation of situation in individual parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border overnight September 12-13 and afterwards. This resulted in high numbers of servicemen being killed, there are victims among the civilian population. We express our deep condolences to their families, and we wish speedy recovery to those wounded. We find the use of force to be unacceptable and we expect that the Russia-mediated agreements reached on the ceasefire will be implemented. We call on Azerbaijan and Armenia to display restraint and refrain from steps which would escalate the situation, and to steadily maintain the agreements reached as part of the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26 of 2021,” he said.
Nebenzya added that the Russian leadership maintains close contact with Baku and Yerevan to stabilize the situation. He expressed hope that the topic will be in focus during Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Samarkand.
On September 13, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces launched a major attack on Armenia from several directions, bombarding both military and civilian infrastructures with rocket-artillery and drone strikes.
105 Armenian troops were killed and 6 civilians were wounded. Azerbaijan halted its attack in the evening of September 14 after a ceasefire was reached.
