YEREVAN, August 29. /ARKA/. Armenia’s partners in Russia are wondering why Americans and Britons must extract Armenian gold and take it away, the chairman of Hanrapetutyun (Republic) party Aram Sargsyan said in an interview to the Public Television of Armenia in comments on the controversial Amulsar mining project.
Sargsyan claimed that the Amulsar gold project has transformed into a political issue, being influenced by both domestic and foreign players.
He said Armenia’s major economic sectors – from energy to gold export – are controlled by Russians, who are jealously looking today towards Amulsar wondering why American and British companies should export gold from Armenia.
Sargsyan also noted that Russians do not want any foreign company, especially a western one, to have a certain influence in the Armenian economy.
“We all understand that economy is also politics, and it is obvious that Russia is trying to weaken the policy of the West in our country. To us, Armenians, it is beneficial to balance out this issue. We need to ensure that not only the Russian ruble, but also the hard currency work in Armenia. The only industry that steadily brings hard currency to the country is mining,” he said.
He argued that if a decision is made to allow the Lydian Armenia company to only extract gold ore and send it to a Russian gold extraction plant in the Armenian town of Ararat, environmental activists will stop their struggle against exploitation of the Amulsar mine.
