YEREVAN, February 27. /ARKA/. Some 4,319,618 people visited Armenia in 2019, by 14.9% more than in 2018, the head of Armenia’s Tourism Committee Susanna Safaryan said today. She said the numbers were provided by the electronic border management information system.
She said some 1,894,377 of them were tourists. Their number grew by 14.7% compared to the previous year. According to her, the bulk of visitors were form the Russian Federation.
“In 2019, the total number of visits from Russia grew by 25.1% from 2018 to 855,612 people. Visits from Georgia came second with 344,507 Georgian citizens visiting Armenia in 2019, by 9. 8% more than in 2018,” she said.
Visitors from Iran were third, however, compared with 2018, their number did not increase, remaining at around 160,000. The number of tourists from Kazakhstan more than doubled to 39,882 people, the number of tourists from Uzbekistan surged by 80% to 9,630 people and the number of Chinese tourists grew by almost 70% to 15,550 people. The number of visits from the United Arab Emirates declined by 7.3% to 11,028.
Safaryan said most of the visitors entered Armenia through the Zvartnots international airport and the Bagratashen checkpoint on border with Georgia.
She said some 1,559,418 people arrived through the Zvartnots airport, an increase of 12.8% compared to the same period in 2018, and 1,825,635 people arrived through the Bagratashen checkpoint, an increase of 13.6%. The number of visits through the Shirak airport in the second-largest town of Gyumri dropped by 10.7% to 73, 590 people.
