Nothing beats good ol’ soap and water.
As a beauty editor, my colleagues are constantly hitting me up for products from the beauty closet. True fact: Makeup remover wipes are the item they request the most, and they’re also the ones I protect the fiercest—I hardly ever give them away because I like to hoard them all for myself. A wipe is the first thing I reach for when I step into my house after kicking off my shoes and bra. I have an immediate urge to get all the makeup and dirt from the day off my face. Later in the evening, I head to the bathroom for my full nighttime cleansing routine.
But in talking to my co-workers and family members, I realized that many people don’t cleanse after using a wipe. Uhhh, I’ve got some bad news guys: It’s not enough to use just a wipe to clean your face. You still need to use soap and water afterwards to get a full cleanse.
Many wipes are made with cleansing agents to help remove makeup. Beyond cleansing agents, the cloths also have preservatives that help make them shelf-stable, meaning that they can just sit there for a long time without growing bacteria or fungus. Both the cleansing agents and the preservatives can leave a residue on your skin after you’re done using them. That residue can feel gunky, and even cause irritation, according to a previous interview with dermatologist Janet H. Prystowsky, M.D., P.C.
There’s also the issue that makeup wipes probably won’t remove all your makeup, according to Dr. Pyrstowsky. Yeah, that waterproof mascara will still be there after you rub over it with a wipe. So it’s better to use a makeup remover with oil or even an oil cleanser after you wipe to make sure the most stubborn makeup is all gone. Going to bed with any makeup left on your face can lead to breakouts and duller skin overall.
I know, I know. Washing your face after using a makeup remover wipe is so time consuming. But healthier, brighter skin is the reward! A makeup wipe followed by a cleanser is the lazy woman’s way to do the traditional K-beauty double cleansing method (which is super trendy right now).
