Turkey has become the most prolific transgressor at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Diken news site reported on Thursday.
Between 1959 and 2020, Turkey was found to have committed 3,309 human rights violations, more than any other country, Diken said citing ECHR data.
Of the 97 cases involving Turkey in 2020, 85 were found to involve at least one rights violation, the news outlet said. The most common violations were freedom of expression at 31, followed by the right to a fair trial at 21, and the right to liberty and security at 16.
Historically, the most ECHR rulings against Turkey have been in cases of right to a fair trial, with 953 since 1959. In the same period, the ECHR ruled that Turkey had violated the right to liberty and security 787 times and the right to the protection of property 688 times.
1.09 of every 10,000 people in Turkey has been subject to an ECHR decision, more than double the average across the 47 members of the Council of Europe.
The number of pending applications from Turkey have also risen by 27 percent in the last year to reach 11,750. This accounts for nearly 20 percent of the total cases waiting to come before the ECHR, Diken said.
