Basnews-ERBIL – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Ankara will receive Russia’s S-400 missile defense system in the upcoming July, while the US has repeatedly threatened to sanctions Turkey if it does so.
“The issue of S-400 is an issue directly related to our sovereignty and we will not backtrack from that. God willing, the delivery of the S-400 will start next month,” Erdogan was quoted by AlJazeera.
Apart from the S-400, Turkey has also planned to buy the US’ F-35 fighter jets with Washington threatening it would remove Turkey from the program if it does not change its mind towards the Russian air defense system.
“In order to meet its security needs, Turkey … does not need to get permission, let alone bow to pressure,” said Erdogan.
However, the US envoy to NATO said on Tuesday that Washington will halt the training process for the Turkish forces on the F-35 stealth jets if Ankara buys the S-400.
