Several of Turkey’s major provinces have registered the fastest increase in the daily COVID-19 infections in the last three days, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Sunday.
“The provinces where the average number of cases has increased the most in the last 3 days are: Istanbul, Ankara, Gaziantep, Mardin, Konya, Bursa, Diyarbakır,” the minister said in his daily Twitter briefing.
The latest Health Ministry data showed 1,148 newly confirmed cases out of 46,414 administered tests since Saturday evening. The fresh cases bring the overall total infections in Turkey to 205,758.
“Our number of intensive care patients, is tending toward an upward trajectory following new cases,” Koca said.
The data on Sunday revealed a total of 1,127 patients in intensive care, almost double the number recorded on June 1, when the government eased coronavirus prevention measures for different facets of Turkish society despite warnings from medical experts and businesspeople.
“If you apply the social distancing rule over and over again, you’ll get plenty of rest on vacation,” Koca said in a separate tweet.
Turkey’s official death toll rose by 19 to 5,225 in the last 24 hours. Over 1,180 patients have recovered during the same time frame, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 180,680.
