Two consecutive earthquakes hit Turkey’s third-largest city of Izmir and its environ on early Monday.
İzmir was rattled by a 5,1-magnitude tremor at 8:46 a.m. and then by an aftershock registering 4.8 on the Richter scale little over an hour later, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
The earthquakes’ epicentre was located in the coastal Karaburun district of western Izmir, in the Aegean Sea, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.
Over 100 people died and 1,033 were injured in a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Izmir on Oct.30. It was the deadliest to strike Turkey in nearly a decade.
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake in northwest Turkey in August 1999 killed more than 18,000 people.
