BEIRUT: Cab hailing company Uber announced Tuesday that it would be providing free rides to voters in Beirut during the upcoming general elections on May 6.
The announcement came during Uber’s open media day at the company’s offices in Beirut Digital District.
“On this very important date for the Lebanese population, Uber will provide riders in Beirut with free trips using a promo code that will be announced soon, to get to their voting stations to cast their ballots,” Anthony Khoury, the company’s General Manager in the Middle East, said.
Lebanon is gearing up to hold its first parliamentary elections since 2009, with a fierce electoral battle expected in the two districts of Beirut.
Uber also outlined their new recruitment process, with applicants now required to submit “official documents, such as identification papers, a clean judiciary record, a taxi-specific driver’s license, insurance papers and a vehicle license issued by the Ministry of Transport”
A team of experts within Uber will then verify these documents and the vehicle will be examined. Drivers will also have to take an onboarding session, which includes good conduct and road safety.
Uber was thrust into the spotlight in the wake of the murder of British national Rebecca Dykes, who was raped and murdered at the hands of a rogue Uber driver in December 2017.
The driver was apprehended two days later and charged with the savage killing.
