YEREVAN, March 5. /ARKA/. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declined today to comment on a statement made by Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan in New York.
On March 30, Davit Tonoyan met with members of the Armenian community of New York saying that in the event of a new war in Karabakh, the Armenian armed forces would not hesitate to seize new territories.
“I, as the Defense Minister of Armenia, say that the option of return of ‘territories for peace’ will no longer exist, and I have re-formulated it into ”new territories in the event of a new war,” he said.
“I cannot assess the specific statement. I can evaluate and reaffirm Russia’s commitment to a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict. Of course, priority is given to the mutual agreements of the parties. If there is a question on which the positions of the parties converge, we welcome it. If mediators’ assistance will be required, we as a co-chair of the Minsk Group are ready to provide it” Zakharova said.
