Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared three days of national mourning after Former Parliament Speaker Hussein al-Husseini died Wednesday morning at the age of 86.
Al-Husseini was one of the founders of the Amal Movement and a main contributor to the brokering of the Taif Agreement that ended the Lebanese Civil War in 1990.
He was elected Speaker of the Parliament in 1984 and remained in this post until 1992.
“Today Lebanon has lost an authentic national and constitutional stature,” Mikati said, adding that “al-Husseini’s presence constituted a milestone in the history of parliamentary work in Lebanon.”
