One Turkish police officer was killed and two other people were wounded in a suspected attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in southern Turkey, Turkish NTV network reported on Tuesday. The attack took place when two suspected female PKK members opened fire on police in southern Turkey late on Monday, it cited the Interior Ministry as saying. The perpetrators, reportedly affiliated with the banned PKK, later killed themselves by detonating suicide bombs, NTV said. The attack took place in the Mezitli district in southern Mersin province, according to the Interior Ministry. Police were guarding a hotel for security officers when the perpetrators opened fire, resulting in a gunfight, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said. One officer was killed, while a second police officer and a civilian on a nearby balcony were injured in the clashes, according to NTV. State-run Anadolu news agency on Tuesday published footage from nearby security camera of the perpetrators ahead of the attack. One suspect has been taken into custody in connection to the attack, the agency said. The PKK is an armed group that has fought for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey for almost four decades. Some 40,000 people, most Kurdish civilians, have been killed in the conflict between the group and the Turkish security forces. It is recognised as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
