Switzerland placed several countries, including Turkey, on its high-risk quarantine list as of Monday, when the country logged over 55,000 new cases of COVID-19.
Turkey joins Croatia, Armenia and Lithuania as countries, from where travellers must quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in Switzerland, Artı Gerçek news site reported.
Switzerland bases the decision to add or remove countries from the list based on infection rates.
Turkey on Monday registered 55,149 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to data from the health ministry, down from an all-time high of 63,000 cases reported on Friday.
A total of 341 people died due to COVID-19 during the same time period, bringing Turkey’s coronavirus linked deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 36,267.
Turkey has registered an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases in the last few weeks, ranking fourth in the world in infections last week, according to a Reuters tally.
The spike in infections has prompted the reintroduction of tighter pandemic restrictions earlier this month, including weekend lockdowns and a two-week evening curfew.
The health ministry on Sunday said that Istanbul registered the highest number of daily infections over the past week, with over 920 cases for every 100,000 residents.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Monday said that intensive care unit beds were at over 71 percent capacity in the megacity, with close figures in surrounding provinces, T24 news site reported.
Ahval
