(ANSAmed) – BEIRUT, NOVEMBER 12 -The normalization of relations between the governments of Syria and the United Arab Emirates, interested in investing once again in Syria, a country torn by 10 years of armed conflict, is progressing at a fast pace, Syrian media reported on Friday. Syrian Economy Minister Samer Khalil reportedly travelled to the UAE with a numerous delegation of entrepreneurs and institutional representative of the trade sector and finance. The visit, which will last until Sunday, includes a series of bilateral meetings between the sides also on the sidelines of Expo in Dubai.
After a 10-year-long freeze on political relations, over the past few days Emirati Foreign Minister Abdallah ben Zayed was received in Damascus by President Bashar al Assad. An Emirati project was announced on Thursday to build a photovoltaic power station east of the Syrian capital. The UAE had frozen diplomatic relations with the Syrian government in February 2012 in the context of armed violence which had been ongoing in the country since the previous year. In 2018, Abu Dhabi reopened its embassy in Damascus – de facto the first Arab country in the Gulf to start normalizing relations with the Syrian government.(ANSAmed).
