President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday vowed that Turkey would continueto raise its voice on Israel’s attacks against Palestinians, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.
Turkey exists to build a world where the righteous are strong,” state-run Anadolu news agency cited Erdoğan as saying in an address marking the country’s national holiday of May 19, Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. “We will shout with the loudest voice where we see the persecution of innocents.”
Referring to the Israeli army, the Turkish president said “hundreds of innocents, many of them women and children, are being killed by high-tech weapons,’’ adding that children and humanity itself had “died’’ in Jerusalem and Gaza.
Erdoğan’s remarks arrive as the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine has entered its 10th day.
At least 227 Palestinians, including 64 children, have been killed in Gaza since the latest bout of conflict with Israel began on May 10, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. More than 1,600 Palestinians have been wounded while 12 people in Israel have died, including two children. At least 300 Israelis have been wounded, Al Jazeera reported.
“If we remain silent in the face of what is happening in Jerusalem today, we know that other holy cities will be threatened tomorrow,” Erdoğan said.
Current tensions began East Jerusalem during the holy month of Ramadan spread to Gaza after the Israeli army attacked worshippers at the compound of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site.
