Ding, ding—it’s time for a good old-fashioned fashion twinning moment! On the red carpet this week, it was all about volume: Zendaya and Jennifer Lopez both shut down the step and repeat in extravagantly large gowns that were over-the-top and capital-E extra. There was tulle, there was feathers, there was bold color—the message was more is more is more.
Lopez attended a screening of her new film Second Act in New York City wearing a hot pink tulle gown by Giambattista Valli. The sleeveless style featured mounds of tulle, layered and cut as though hacked with a chainsaw. Still, with its shaped waist and shortened hem at the front, it was surprisingly flattering. And her extra-long train served up a major moment that is quite unexpected for a standard film screening. (But this is JLo: standard rules do not apply.)
Meanwhile, Zendaya attended an Âme jewelry launch event in Los Angeles wearing a sleeveless, tiered feather frock from the Marc Jacobs Spring 2019 collection. With its pink and tangerine plummage, and matching pastel pink pumps, the ensemble was sweet and unabashedly fun. And she served that look, twirling for photographers to give her dress some extra life.
So, who is the real winner? It’s a strong tie, really—both get credit for taking party dresses to an entirely new level. But given its difficulty level, JLo may just take the cake for committing to her mile-long train.
