YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS. The United States is committed to support Armenia’s democracy and stands by the Armenian people at difficult moments, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said in her remarks at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts in Yerevan on September 18.
Mrs. Pelosi said that she is the first Speaker of the US House of Representatives to visit Armenia. “I am now standing between the flags of our two countries. It’s a great pride”, she said, stating that it shows the partnership with Armenia.
Speaker Pelosi also extended the congratulations of the US Congress to Armenia ahead of its Independence Day, celebrated on September 21.
“For us, this is like a family visit. We are elected from places where there are a lot of American-Armenians. They are patriotic Americans and are very proud of their Armenian origins. They have told us this very clearly. We follow the Armenian challenges also at the eyes of our voters”, the Speaker said.
She said that they are proud of eventually adopting the resolution on the Armenian Genocide. “Joe Biden is the friend of Armenia, and we are proud that he signed it and also invited the Prime Minister of Armenia to the Democracy Summit which was a very important event. I am here to say that the United States is committed to support the democracy of Armenia. And we stand by the Armenian people at difficult moments when there is a fight between democracy and autocracy”, the Speaker of the House of Representatives said.
Nancy Pelosi said that her visit to Armenia was planned earlier, last week. “But we came here at the moment when we can personally strongly condemn Azerbaijan’s unacceptable, threatening actions that endanger the progress of the peace process. As an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair and Armenia’s friend the United States is committed to support the negotiated, sustainable peace process. The United States has long said that there can be no military solution to this conflict”, she said.
Nancy Pelosi said that the United States follows the issue, adding that it is a priority direction for President Biden and the Congress.
“Our delegation visited Armenia to discuss the issues relating to security, democracy and economy”, Nancy Pelosi said.
